About Southside
What We Believe
JESUS | GOSPEL
We are a small, intimate community of Jesus followers in Corvallis, Oregon. Jesus is a figure who burst onto the scene of the world 2000 years ago and has enamored humanity ever since. He proclaimed that a new Kingdom was at hand and then proceeded to launch it. He defies all categories. He fits no political party. He doesn’t need the affirmation of any man or group, and He can be summarized with no simple human idea. He is the Messiah, the Son of God. We are a group of people who each is being changed by this man and His work which inaugurated the new world situation – the Kingdom of God.
CORVALLIS | COMMUNITY
We are located in the south side of Corvallis, Oregon. We love Corvallis. We love the people here. We love the places. We love it with its problems, and we feel it is part of our unique purpose and placement to live in the tension between Corvallis and the Kingdom. We want to invite Corvallis to know Jesus, and to join us as we walk into the Kingdom He is ushering in.
SINNERS | SAINTS | SERVANTS
To acquaint you with how we think of ourselves, we would say that we identify ourselves three ways: sinners, saints, and servants. We have something in common with Corvallis- indeed, with the world. We are sinners. We have all accepted a way of life that ignores, and pushes against God and His rule of love and purity. As a result we need a Savior in a big way. Jesus is that Savior. Second, we see ourselves as saints. Jesus lived the life we should have lived, died the death we should have died, and rose again, conquering sin, satan, and self. This mean that those things that cause death don’t have to characterize and rule us any more if we believe and trust Jesus at our core. He was set apart from those things and therefore makes us a people who are set apart from it as well as we follow him. That is what it means to be a saint – a set apart one. Third, we see ourselves as servants. We are not our own anymore. We were bought by the life and death of Jesus, and we live to follow, learn, and serve him. That also means we are here to serve Corvallis as He directs us.
THE APOSTLE'S CREED
The Apostle's Creed is a well-known and accurate summary of the key tenets of our Christian faith. While we at SouthSide long to convey a more robust expression of our faith and doctrine through the lives of our community this creed serves as a helpful means of communicating in it's briefest form our statement of faith. The creed is as follows:
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth.
And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried.
He descended into hell. On the third day He rose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.
From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
For a more complete understanding of our doctrinal views and stances please visit our Doctrines page. The above version of the Apostle's Creed can be found online here. We also agree with the broad and historic protestant beliefs as seen in The Lausanne Covenant Statement of Faith.
